System for Dive Computers

Underwater navigation is very difficult since the range of view is very limited depending
on the clarity of the water. Up to now recreational divers are only supported by a compass
for their navigation back to the ship.
In our project we intend to develop a Navigation System which is based on MEMS inertial
sensors and keeps track of the actual diver position. So the system is able to guide the diver
back to ship.
The subtasks of the project are
- selecting MEMS- Sensors for linear and angular acceleration measurement with sufficient
accuracy and developing a measurement setup
- development of an underwater pressure sensor unit for the acquiring of the pressure based
depth information for the correction of sensor errors
- the development of an algorithm especially for the correction of offset and gain errors
of the sensors and the prove of function with a mechatronic simulation
- development of a demonstrator with a Laptop and the sensor hardware for overwater demonstration
of the operation and investigations about the exactness of the positioning
- development of a microcontroller- hardware and a display
- development of a software for the microcontroller
- development of a water and pressure resistant housing for the hardware including the display
and the buttons for underwater operation
