Abstract

"In recent decades, more and more driver assistance systems, such as the elec- tronic stability program (ESP), the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and distance control systems became part of modern vehicles. This led to improved road safety and reduced the number of accidents. At the same time, the electronic car systems presented new challenges when the systems do not react as expected and put safety at risk. Continuous inspection of the vehicle should ensure that the electronics are in a faultless condition. The auditors are constantly confronted with new challenges within in the field of assistance systems. This thesis examines the field of safety- relevant distance control systems. Approaches will be acquired to carry out a qual- ified diagnosis within the scope of a main inspection. For this purpose, the first chapters describe the functions and the structure of the currently available sys- tems on the market combined with a brief introduction of the basics of a main inspection. The main part consists of three experiments that are executed to de- termine the possibilities and limits of diagnostic procedures. The results clearly indicate that today's methods have reached their limits when testing the distance control systems. Concluding that for complete functional test, either the manufac- turer has to be responsible to implement appropriate test routines in the control units or the testing organizations themselves have to invest in more extensive test scenarios."
